AI & Society · Grade 5 · Chapter 9
AI Helpers in Daily Life & Ethics
Exploring how AI transforms healthcare, farming, and daily life — and how we keep AI fair and safe.
Learning Goals
What We'll Explore Today
GOAL 1
Real-World AI
Discover AI applications in medicine, environmental protection, and smart homes.
GOAL 2
AI Bias & Fairness
Learn how biased training data can make AI systems make unfair decisions.
GOAL 3
Human Responsibility
Understand the "Human-in-the-Loop" rule for ethical AI deployment.
Prior Knowledge
AI Around Us
We already know AI powers recommendation feeds on YouTube and voice assistants like Siri. But AI is also working in places you might never suspect!
Brainstorm: Can AI help doctors in hospitals or farmers in cornfields? How?
Real-World Story
Tariq's AI Farm Drone
Tariq's family farm covers 500 acres. Detecting plant diseases by walking would take weeks. Tariq uses an AI-powered camera drone that flies over the field in 10 minutes!
The AI camera spots slight leaf color changes invisible to the human eye, pinpointing exactly 3 sick plants before the disease spreads!
Core Concept
3 Spheres of Everyday AI
🩺 Healthcare
Scans X-rays to detect tiny bone fractures and assists doctors in designing new vaccines.
🌍 Environment
Monitors endangered wildlife with acoustic sensors and tracks illegal rainforest deforestation.
🏠 Smart Cities
Optimizes traffic lights to reduce traffic jams and prevents city power grid blackouts.
Case Study
AI Cleaning Our Oceans
Autonomous solar boats use computer vision cameras to identify floating plastic bottles in river mouths and filter them out before they reach ocean whales!
Sensor Input ➔ AI Object Detection ("Plastic Bottle: 98%") ➔ Mechanical Arm Scoop Enabled!
Ethics & Responsibility
What is AI Ethics?
AI Ethics is the set of moral guidelines that ensure AI technologies are designed to be fair, safe, unbiased, and respectful of privacy.
Golden Rule: Technology should empower and help ALL human beings equally!
Critical Concept
Understanding AI Bias
If an AI model is fed flawed or incomplete training data, it learns and repeats those exact human mistakes. This is called Algorithmic Bias.
❌ BIASED DATASET
An AI medical scanner trained ONLY on adult men's health data may fail to accurately diagnose women or children!
✅ BALANCED DATASET
An AI trained on diverse data representing all ages, backgrounds, and body types provides fair, accurate results!
Safety Rule
The "Human-in-the-Loop" Principle
For high-stakes decisions (like medical diagnoses, legal decisions, or self-driving safety), AI should ASSIST human experts, never replace final human judgment!
1
AI Recommendation
AI flags a potential issue in data.
2
Human Review
Human doctor/engineer verifies the AI output.
3
Safe Action
Human makes the final safe decision.
Debunking Myths
Misconceptions About AI Fairness
Myth: "Computers cannot be biased because they're math"
Fact: Math algorithms learn directly from historical human data. If human historical data is biased, the math reinforces the bias!
Myth: "AI will take away all jobs"
Fact: AI transforms jobs by automating repetitive tasks, creating new roles for AI creators, trainers, and ethics auditors!
Smartboard Voting
Ethical AI Check!
Is this AI application ETHICAL (Thumbs UP) or RISKY (Thumbs DOWN)?
- 1. AI camera helping wildlife rangers spot poachers at night.
- 2. AI system grading student essays without any teacher supervision.
- 3. AI app translating braille into spoken words for visually impaired students.
- 4. AI voice generator impersonating someone without their permission.
Spot the Bias
The Playground Camera Bug
Scenario: A school installs an AI security gate that opens automatically for registered students. But it frequently fails to open for students wearing hats or glasses!
Discussion: Why did the gate fail? What was wrong with the training photos used by the engineers?
Think-Pair-Share
Designing an AI School Assistant
Imagine designing an AI robot helper for your school cafeteria or library.
Partner Task: 1. What task does it do? 2. How does it protect student privacy? 3. What human supervisor checks its work?
Guided Practice
Building the AI Ethics Charter
Let's establish our class rules for using AI responsibly!
RULE 1: Verify AI facts with trusted sources.
RULE 2: Never input private personal info into AI tools.
RULE 3: Use AI to boost creativity, not to cheat or copy!
Ethics Audit Challenge
Audit the Smart Doctor App
A medical company wants to launch a smartphone app that gives kids medical prescriptions based on a photo of their rash.
Your Task: Act as an AI Ethics Auditor. List 2 reasons why a real human doctor MUST check the app before prescriptions are given!
Quick Check · Question 1
What causes an AI system to become biased and make unfair decisions?
ARunning out of battery power
BBeing trained on incomplete, unfair, or unbalanced training data
CUsing a high-definition screen
DConnected to high-speed internet

Quick Check · Question 2
What does the "Human-in-the-Loop" principle mean in AI technology?
AA human must hold the computer cable
BHuman experts must supervise and verify critical AI decisions before actions are taken
CHumans should let AI run everything without checking
