PowerPoint Skills Refresh

Mastering template architecture, alignment grids, vector graphics, Morph transitions, and presenter controls.

Lesson Overview

Learning Objectives

Grade 6 Elevation

Moving from Basic Slides to Professional Presentations

Basic Beginner Slide

Manually dragging text boxes, default white background, random bullet point sizes, and flashy spinning clip-art.

Master Technical Deck

Custom Master Slide layouts, structured vector cards, crisp contrast ratios, and seamless Morph transitions.

Case Study

The 20-Slide Formatting Nightmare

Sami built a 20-slide presentation. Then his teacher said: "Change all title headers from Blue to Purple and increase font size to 36pt." Sami manually edited all 20 slides one by one for an hour!

Smartboard Challenge: What PowerPoint feature allows you to update all 20 slide headers in just 3 seconds?
Core Concept #1

The Power of Slide Master View

Slide Master View is the top-level blueprint that controls colors, fonts, headers, footers, and logo positions across your entire presentation deck.

GLOBAL FONTS

Font Hierarchy

Defines primary Title font and secondary Body font defaults for all slides.

COLOR SCHEMES

Theme Palette

Enforces brand-compliant primary, secondary, and accent colors automatically.

PLACEHOLDERS

Layout Templates

Creates custom 2-column, 3-card, or image-split slide structures.

Precision Design

Vector Alignment & Distribution

Smart Guides & Snap Lines

Red indicator lines appear automatically when objects align perfectly with margins or center points.

Distribute Horizontally / Vertically

Select 3+ cards, click Arrange ➔ Align ➔ Distribute Horizontally to calculate equal pixel spacing instantly!

Design Quality

Manual Eyeballing vs Mathematical Grid

❌ Eyeballed Drag & Drop

Uneven gaps between cards, tilted text alignments, elements overflowing slide margins.

✅ Distribute & Align Grid

Exact 16px gutter margins, crisp horizontal alignment baseline, visually balanced slide layout.

Accessibility

Typography & Contrast Ratios

If your audience in the back row cannot read your text easily, your presentation fails!

CONTRAST RATIO

4.5:1 Standard

High contrast dark text on light backgrounds (or white text on dark background).

MINIMUM SIZES

Readability Rules

Titles: 32pt - 44pt
Body Lead: 18pt - 24pt
Never below 16pt!

FONT PAIRING

Max 2 Fonts

Pair one bold Header font (Space Grotesk) with one clean Body font (Inter).

Vector Engineering

Combining Shapes with "Merge Shapes"

Create custom icons and visual diagrams directly inside PowerPoint.

Union & Combine

Fuses 2 separate circles/rectangles into a single seamless custom vector shape.

Subtract & Intersect

Cuts out geometric overlapping sections to form custom arrows, badges, and progress rings.

Advanced Animation

The Magic of Morph Transition

Morph automatically tracks identical objects across 2 consecutive slides and calculates smooth 3D-like movement, rotation, and scaling.

STEP 1

Build Slide 1

Place shape at left (X: 100, Size: Small).

STEP 2

Duplicate Slide

Duplicate to create exact copy Slide 2.

STEP 3

Modify Slide 2

Move shape to right (X: 800, Size: Large).

STEP 4

Apply Morph

Select Morph on Transitions tab!

Motion Control

Entrance, Emphasis, and Exit Animations

GREEN

Entrance

Controls how elements appear on screen (e.g. Fade In, Wipe Right).

YELLOW

Emphasis

Draws attention to active items (e.g. Pulse, Color Change).

RED

Exit

Removes items when moving to the next discussion point.

Myth Buster

Animation Overload Trap

❌ "Spin & Bounce Everything!"

Adding 3D spinning, zooming, and sound effects to every bullet point causes motion sickness and distracts from content.

✅ Subtle Purposeful Motion

Use simple 0.3s Fade or Wipe animations strictly to guide audience attention step-by-step.

Delivery Tools

Mastering Presenter View & Shortcuts

What the audience sees on the projector vs what YOU see on your laptop monitor!

Laptop Screen Tools

Displays private speaker notes, next slide preview, live timer clock, and digital laser pointer tool.

Essential Presentation Keys

Press 'B' to black out screen (brings focus to speaker!). Press 'W' for white screen. Press 'F5' to start slideshow.

Smartboard Challenge

Spot the 4 Layout Errors

A slide displays yellow text on a light gray background, 4 different font families, misaligned images, and a paragraph with 12 lines of 12pt text.

Solve on smartboard: List the 4 formatting bugs and explain how to fix each using today's tools!
Smartboard Challenge

Morph Transition Puzzle

You want a planet icon to zoom in smoothly from Slide 1 to Slide 2. What are the exact 4 steps to achieve this without manual frame animation?

Class Exercise: Order the steps: Apply Morph, Duplicate Slide, Resize Object on Slide 2, Create Initial Slide 1.
Practical Exercise

Building a 3-Card Vector Layout in PowerPoint

STEP 1

Draw 1 Card Shape

Rounded Rectangle (Fill: Dark, Border: Accent).

STEP 2

Duplicate 3 Times

Press Ctrl+D twice to make identical copies.

STEP 3

Align & Distribute

Align Top ➔ Distribute Horizontally.

STEP 4

Group Vector

Press Ctrl+G to lock layout into place.

Spot The Bug

Why did the Morph Transition fail?

Huda created a star shape on Slide 1. On Slide 2, she deleted the star and inserted a brand new star shape from the Insert menu. When she applied Morph, the star just faded out and back in!

Debug Prompt: Why must you duplicate the slide instead of deleting and re-inserting objects for Morph to work?
Multimedia

Embedding Audio & Video Controls

Video Trimming & Poster Frame

Trim unnecessary clip intros directly inside PowerPoint and set a static clean Poster Frame thumbnail image.

Background Audio Triggers

Set background audio clips to "Play Across Slides" and "Hide During Show" for smooth background soundscapes.
